Veterinary Firearms Make the News

Someway, somehow, the veterinary profession has found their way to the center of the week’s biggest story. We aren’t here to update you on the latest details on the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was shot and killed in Manhattan. And we’re definitely not here to re-share the (questionable to say the least) reaction from those of us who are chronically online.

But we are here to share the latest news: CNN is reporting that apparently the NYPD has reason to believe that the suspect used a veterinary pistol designed to aid in the euthanasia of large animals.

Ugh… vets have enough on our plate. Just leave us out of this one, please.

Increasing job satisfaction in the veterinary field

As we like to do from time to time, this week we’re recommending a podcast from dvm360. We don’t have the chance to do it often, but when we’re able to bring good news like increasing job satisfaction, we’re all for it.

Can we speak cat now?

There have been hundreds of studies looking at animal communication styles, and we’ve covered it before in Weekend Rounds. We’ve covered how AI is helping us talk to animals, and the $10 million prize for researchers that can solve for “reliable interspecies communication” - aka talking to animals.

But nothing might me more important than the current viral trend of shouting “ma-ha” at a cat and watching them come over. This all started thanks to a user who claims to know how to speak to cats. We think(?) he’s joking around, but maybe he’s on to something? Here’s a compilation video of it seeming to work:

Well, cat owners? Please give it a shot and send us the videos. We need to know.

If you’re more interested in the science side of feline medicine, scientists have learned a little more about the genetics behind orange fur. If nothing else this is great water cooler talk or interesting information to share with that client who loves his orange cats.
