Happy Veterinary Technician Week!
Plus: a veterinary comedy podcast
Hello 👋
Welcome back to another edition of Weekend Rounds!
There is a lot to celebrate this week. Not only are we wrapping up National Veterinary Technician Week (more on that below!), but it’s also our favorite season of the year and officially sweater weather.
That’s right, it’s sweata weatha.
Miss Congeniality would have you believe that April 25 is the perfect date because it’s not too hot, and not too cold. But we’d like to make a case for today, because mid- to late-October has it all. For sports fans, the NFL and NHL are in full swing, MLB postseason is as entertaining as ever, basketball is around the corner, Premier League football is rolling and we’re past the summer F1 break. The weather is nice, the foliage is stunning, pumpkin spice lattes are here, and it’s the perfect time to cozy up near a bonfire with a book. What’s not to love?
It’s hard to focus on anything except how great autumn is, but we’ll try:

Happy National Veterinary Technician Week!
We’ve just wrapped up Veterinary Technician Week, which is celebrated during the third week of October every year. It’s a time to celebrate, recognize, and promote the valuable contributions of vet techs and nurses. But if that’s not something you’re doing every day in your clinic then we need to have a stern talking about how you’re treating your colleagues.
This week DVM360 featured a spotlight on Michael Azzarello, president of New Jersey Veterinary Technicians and Assistants where they talked about his career as a veterinary technician, and the AAHA is reminding us to show genuine personalized gratitude to vet techs.
We’re not saying these stories aren’t important, but if anyone knows how important vet techs are, it’s us… the other people working in the clinic. What we really need to change is the attitude and perception of our clients. Which is why we love t
he campaign from NAVC called ‘Trust me, I’m a Vet Tech’. Their free downloadable toolkit is designed to educate clients about the crucial role of vet techs in providing medical and nursing care to their beloved pets.

Putting the MED in coMEDy
There are two topics that don’t often mix but that we truly love: medicine and comedy. Veterinary surgical oncologist, comedian, thyroid cancer survivor, and author Sarah Boston, is the host of the podcast Comedicine where she interviews other healthcare professionals about their careers in the clinic and on the stage.
Truthfully, it’s a topic close to our heart. Comedy can be an effective tool to deal with grief and connect with people - two of the most important soft skills a vet can have. Give it a shot and hopefully she will get to interview Ken Jeong next season.

Radiology case of the week
Thank you for responding last week letting us know which topics are most interesting to you. We hear you loud and clear: exploring common abdominal and thoracic diseases is the top of your list, and we're thrilled to deliver exactly what you're looking for in this week’s edition of The Reading Room.
We understand how important these topics are, and we're committed to helping you become a radiology rockstar in your practice!
This week’s case is a 5 year old mixed breed dog presenting with a 72 hour history of vomiting and anorexia:
