We want to take a minute to honor Bob Barker, the former host of gameshow The Price Is Right, who died Saturday at the age of 99. As a generous supporter of PETA, his overall approach to animal welfare may be polarizing to the veterinary community but there is no disputing that Barker was a long time champion of animal rights. He had an undeniable impact on animal health, including supporting animal population control by signing off The Price Is Right with his now famous line, "This is Bob Barker reminding you to help control the pet population — have your pets spayed or neutered.”

Barker founded the DJ&T Foundation which supports low cost spay and neuter clinics, and fought for animal rights for a good portion of his life. And for that we salute him. Rest in peace, Bob.

Following Ivan Zakharenkov’s article on VIN in June that questioned production-based systems, the VIN message boards have been lighting up with over 200 comments on the subject. Royal Canin is partnering with Uber and Hannah Shaw for their annual Take your Cat the the Vet (#Cat2Vet) campaign aimed to bring more people and their cats to you. The campaign offers $10 off the first $5000 eligible Uber rides to bring a cat to a vet in 15 US cities.

Apparently that whole, “we got a puppy to keep Rover young” line might not be complete bull after all. A new study from the Dog Aging Project shows that social connection like living with another dog can extend a dog’s lifespan.

Pets in some Michigan counties may be eligible for inclusion in a study on the affect of PFAS on the health of dogs. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are found in many products and may pose a health risk to animal populations as well as people.

Ultrasound may induce hibernation like states in some animals. So now we know how interstellar transport will happen.

‘No Pets Allowed’ signs in Florida grocery chain Publix have started to appear in stores, including a lengthy explanation between emotional support animals and service animals. The policy has been listed on the Publix website since 2021, so it’s unclear why they large signs are popping up now.

Profits 💰

Petco’s second quarter earnings show that the company has almost doubled its cash flow from last year.

Modern Animal, purveyor of conference tattoo parlors and sleek clinics, is expanding into Arizona, Colorado and Georgia next year.

AAHA and the Korean Veterinary Medical Association have partnered to set standards in South Korea and accredit clinics.
