Plus, what is your least favorite breed to treat?
Hello 👋
Welcome back to another edition of Weekend Rounds!
That’s right, we’re back after taking a week off last weekend. One co-founder was recovering from WVC in Las Vegas, and the other was spending some much needed time with family. We don’t just promote positive self-care for you… we practice what we preach too 🙂
But the news doesn’t stop. Here’s the latest across vet med news, entertainment, and education:

More vet schools!
Depending on who you believe, there is either a massive veterinary shortage or none at all. But either way, there are more veterinarians coming. Currently there are only 56 AVMA accredited veterinary schools worldwide, but more are on the way:
Lyon College and Arkansas State University both took steps forward toward becoming the first and second accredited veterinary schools in Arkansas - a state currently ranked 49th in the availability of vets. Lyon is set to open in 2025 with ASU right behind it in 2026.
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore received state approval to establish their vet school and would become just the second of the more than 100 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) to open a vet school. We are very excited by this news, as it will directly address a major problem in our profession; less than 3% of veterinarians are Black. The last time this figure saw a notable increase was the 1940s when the first HBCU, Tuskegee University, opened their vet school.
Puerto Rico’s first veterinary college, The Ana G. Mendez University School of Veterinary Medicine, is now accepting student applications to join the inaugural class beginning in August.
And last month, plans for Clemson University’s new College of Veterinary Medicine continued to move forward as they released renderings of the campus buildings. Clemson hopes to welcome its inaugural class in 2026, and will be the first veterinary program in South Carolina.
The slew of new veterinary colleges come alongside a concerning trend, the exodus of veterinary specialists from academia. The problem is multifactorial, but the discrepancy in pay between academia and private practice and increasing burdens on faculty as well as increasing rates of burnout are resulting in open vacancies in many of the existing schools. So this begs the questions, who is going to teach at all these new schools?
To read more on faculty exodus from veterinary schools we recommend this fantastic Substack from Dr. Eric Fish.
