Results of The AVMA Presidential Election

Plus: pet photography awards and kitten ratings

Hello 👋

It’s official - we’re into the dog days of summer in the northern hemisphere. The days are long and hot, and we’re not even considering the record breaking heatwave sweeping across Europe.

We’re going to try and keep things light today, with just a few feel-good stories. Today’s edition pairs well with a cold beverage. We recommend an iced coffee from your local coffee shop.

This week, we’re here for a good time, not a long time:

On July 14, the AVMA House of Delegates elected Dr. Sandra Faeh as the next president-elect of AVMA.

Last week, we covered what each candidate brought to the table. The three candidates brought different views to their platforms, most notably on telemedicine and the creation of a mid-level practitioner.

Whereas one candidate, Dr. Robert Murtaugh, was seeking to radically alter the AVMA's stance on remote care, Dr. Faeh represents a more moderate approach to telemedicine reform.

"I spent a year listening and learning from so many of you. We have so many challenges. That means we have so many opportunities. I look forward to working with each and every one of you. And, like I said almost every day this past year, please reach out. Please reach out so that I can continue to listen and learn, and together we can create avenues to success."

Dr. Sandra Faeh

Dr. Faeh is chief veterinary officer for National Veterinary Associates (NVA), where she is also helping the company build a clinical mentorship program. Before joining NVA, Dr. Faeh was part owner of four small animal hospitals in the Chicago suburbs. She graduated in 1996 from the University of Illinois, previously serving as president of the Student AVMA (SAVMA). Dr. Faeh has also served as president of the Illinois State and Chicago VMAs.

📸 2023 Comedy Pet Photography awards

Not every story can be about about the heavy hitting topics of elections, burnout, vet shortages, and drug approvals. Sometimes we just need to appreciate the weird and wonderful side of our profession. Today that means siting back and enjoying the shortlisted candidates for the 2023 Comedy Pet Photography Awards. Here are a few of our favorites:

🐈️ Kitten ratings

You know what? We enjoyed the comedy pet photos… let’s keep the good vibes going.

Meet Dr. Matt McGlasson, a vet in Kentucky who has devised a very scientific method to assess and rank cats. Dr. McGlasson scores his feline patients on a rigorous scale that include their chonk factor, stretchiness, headbutt rating, noodle tail, squish face and tabby M.

We see absolutely nothing wrong with this ranking system. 10/10. No notes.
