So long non-competes!

Plus: world veterinary day and marijuana toxicities

Hello 👋

Welcome back to a special party edition of Weekend Rounds!

We’re throwing one giant celebration to commemorate World Veterinary Day and the end of the non-compete clause. Sing along if you know the words!

🎶
There's a party goin' on right here,
A celebration for our vets so dear.
So bring your good times, and your laughter too,
We gonna celebrate and thank all of you!

Celebrate good times, come on! (It's a celebration)
Celebrate good times, come on! (Let's give them ovation)

We're gonna have a good time tonight,
Let's salute the vets who make pets feel alright.
We'll come together, in every nation,
For the love they give, deserves a standing ovation.

And there's a reason, everybody sing,
For the FTC did an amazing thing.
Non-competes are out, that's the decree,
Now there's more freedom for you and me.

🗣️ EVERYBODY NOW:

Celebrate good times, come on! (It's a liberation)
Celebrate good times, come on! (No more limitation)

Here’s what else we’re singing about this week:

Say goodbye to the non-compete

That’s right, Lina Khan and the FTC voted 3-2 in favor of banning non-compete clauses in the US. The action is already be challenged by big business lobby arms by bringing lawsuits in the state of Texas, however the decision represents a landmark event for our profession.

Veterinarians everywhere have been plagued by non-compete clauses in their contracts that restrict freedom, harm wellbeing, lower wages and decrease innovation, and new business formation.

While supporters of the ban will point to the fact that this measure will create 4.8 billion dollars in new jobs across all sectors, all we need to know is that in veterinary medicine, it means that veterinarians will no longer feel stuck in dead-end positions. Which means that clinics will need to focus on equitable pay and positive work environments to retain staff.

Those in favor of non-competes point to the fact that they will no longer be as wealthy and they may need to share their private jet with other billionaires. We’re being cheeky obviously, but it is hard to steel man a rule that really only serves to further wealth disparity between workers and employers.

Non-compete clauses are already difficult or unable to be enforced in some locations including California and parts of Canada. The rule is far from taking hold but we are celebrating nonetheless.

World Veterinary Day

Yesterday, April 27, was World Veterinary Day and the theme in 2024 was “Veterinarians are Essential Health Workers.” The World Veterinary Association ran the social campaign #ofcourse because… well #ofcourse we are.

With a recent Boehringer poll showing less than half of veterinarians feeling the profession is appreciated this is a particularly pertinent theme this year.

At Obi Veterinary Education, we’re thinking of all the incredible vets that we’re lucky enough to work with, the specialists who teach on our CE platform, and each and everyone one of you - the members of the Obi community.

And ICYMI, we’re celebrating with $50 off your first year of the All Access Pass.

Marijuana toxicities in your clinics

Las week we asked you to let us know how many marijuana toxicities you have seen in the last 12 months. The results surprised us, but maybe not you…

🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️ 0-5 (23)

🟨🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️ 5-10 (25)

🟨🟨🟨⬜️⬜️⬜️ 10-15 (18)

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 >15 (37)

Out of 103 people approximately 35% of you are seeing more than one case per month. That’s a lot of wobbly, incontinent pups.
