That's Dr. MasterChef to you

Plus: a vet med business round up

Hello 👋

Welcome back to another edition of Weekend Rounds!

We took a week off last week to enjoy a long weekend and holiday Monday. We’re feeling recharged, well-rested, and ready to tackle the week ahead. You should try it. Seriously, you deserve a break. Be kind to yourself. Happy Memorial Day.

Before we dive in, we would like to highlight an update we have made to our May 12th edition. The lead story, highlighting differences between the AVMA and the AAVMC, did not properly attribute the original reporting to VIN News Service. Weekend Rounds aggregates the latest news stories from talented reporters and writers across veterinary medicine and beyond. We are indebted to those doing this hard work, and seek to elevate their platform by delivering the latest in news, entertainment, and education to thousands of veterinarians every week.

Here’s what we’re covering this week:

Vet Business Round Up

It has been two weeks since we’ve been able to bring you the latest business news from around vet med, and we bookmarked a few stories for you along the way:

  • As part of their ongoing expansion into veterinary care, Walmart will begin offering 24/7 telehealth services to Walmart+ subscribers starting later this year. The heavy lifting will be done by Pawp, whose services Walmart pilot tested last year. The move to provide ongoing telehealth services will complement Walmart’s intention to expand their brick-and-mortar veterinary practice.

  • Modern Animal announced a new service that leverages Generative AI to automate important administrative tasks that take up a vet’s time including patient overviews, visit summarizations, and interpretation of lab work.

  • The CBC published an article about corporate consolidation in Canada, and what it may mean for clients.

  • A few weeks ago Weekend Rounds covered a YouTube video that outlined how vets are paid, including the details behind production pay. A veterinarian from Miami, Dr. Patty Khuly, shared some history behind the pay structure and his opinion on when they work and when they don’t on Veterinary Practice News.

  • CVS Group - a British veterinary consolidator - sold all their practices in Ireland and the Netherlands for 2 euros after posting losses of about USD $8.6 million in their most recent fiscal year. VIN News Service has the story.

Veterinary Surgeon Wins MasterChef

We absolutely love to see veterinarians excel outside of the clinic. We were banging the drum in March when Dr. Jasmin Paris, became the first woman to complete the Barkley Marathons.

And now we are thrilled to see that 29-year-old Dr. Brin Pirathapan, a veterinarian from Chelmsford is the most recent winner of BBC TV's Masterchef.

After a long day at work, we barely have the energy to reheat leftovers, let alone refine our culinary skills, enter a world famous competition, and beat out 57 other competitors. Hats off to you, Brin.

Farm Bill 2024

Following advocacy from the AVMA, The House and Senate Agriculture Committees have passed a new Farm Bill that reauthorizes essential federal programs for veterinary medicine. The bill includes the Healthy Dog Importation Act, which aims to prevent the spread of animal and human health diseases, as well as reauthorization of animal disease prevention and management programs. Additionally, the bill supports vital veterinary programs like the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) and the Veterinary Services Grant Program (VSGP), which help recruit and retain veterinarians in rural areas.

The US has made a push to change the travel of dogs across its border, including new rules which affect Canadian travelers in a more restrictive way than they have in the past beginning August 1. As cross-border veterinary care is often sought on an emergency basis, this law will impact veterinary care near the 49th parallel.
